How we know Sean isn’t dead

Sean has a secret phrase. Typing it in proves he was alive at that moment (zombies can’t spell). The longer he goes without typing it, the more nervous this website gets. Two things go into the number:

  1. How likely a man his age is to die. Singapore men have a death rate that rises roughly exponentially with age (the Gompertz–Makeham law). It is fitted so the numbers match SingStat's 2025 figures: life expectancy of 81.8 at birth and 19.9 more years at 65.
  2. How often he checks in. A living Sean is assumed to type his phrase about once every 30 days, at random. A dead Sean never does. So a long silence is suspicious, but only a little, because 34-year-olds rarely die. Mostly they’re just busy.
  3. Bayes' rule puts them together. a₀ is his age at the last check-in and Δ is the time since:
    The top line is “still alive, just ignoring the website”. The integral adds up every way he could have died at some moment u since the last check-in, weighted by the chance he'd have stayed quiet until then.
